THE big screen at Turf Moor was used to raise the awareness of a memorial fund in aid of Pendleside Hospice.

Devoted Clarets fan Gail Simpson, of Smithyfield Avenue, Worsthorne, died two weeks ago aged 61, after suffering ovarian cancer.

Her family aim to raise £10,000 for the hospice over the next year in her memory.

And during Burnley’s 1-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday, Gail’s smiling face was shown several times with the message: Gail Simpson, 1953-2014. Please help raise £10k for Pendleside Hospice in her memory.

Her family are now planning events to raise the money. These include a sponsored walk over Hurstwood, a charity football match hopefully featuring two teams of ex-Clarets, garden fetes, pub quizzes, a soul all-dayer and a soul night.

Gail’s husband Alan, deputy editor at the Lancashire Telegraph, said: “The response to our appeal has already been fantastic.

“A sizeable amount, which is still being collected, was raised by donations at her funeral. We have set up a donation page at justgiving.com/gailsimpson and businesses have offered to put collection boxes in their premises.

“While Gail didn’t live long enough to enter the hospice, their Hospice At Home service was a comfort to both herself and the family.

“Seeing Gail’s face smiling down on Turf Moor as the Clarets picked up three points was very pleasing.

“She would have loved to have thought she had had an influence on the victory!”

A club spokesman said: “Gail was a popular and well known Burnley fan.

“Everybody here was saddened to hear of her passing and we are happy to support the fundraising efforts.”
