A TEENAGER has been given a new lease of life after undergoing an operation to straighten her spine.

Lauryn Brogden, 15, from Padiham, who suffers from idiopathic scoliosis, was unable to lie down or stand up straight without suffering agonising pain.

But now, following a five-hour operation, in which surgeons placed two titanium rods at the base of Lauryn’s spine, the Unity College pupil is able to stand straight, play table tennis and show off her brilliant posture in trendy clothes that now fit her properly for the first time in years.

Lauryn’s mum Susan, who works at aerospace firm Aircelle in Burnley, said: “Lauryn is still limited in what she can do but she is able to play non-contact sports and can move around much easier than she could before.

“Her operation was at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and everyone there was just brilliant. This procedure has been amazing.

“We were expecting it to take around eight hours but it only took around five. When she came to, she was a little sore and groggy but after only a few days she could sit up straight.

Lancashire Telegraph:

“The first time I saw her walking, I was shocked.

“I noticed the difference straight away and just couldn’t believe how straight she looked.”

Susan – who lives with husband Lee, Lauryn and their younger daughter Larissa, in Ruskin Avenue – said before surgery, Lauryn looked as though she had a ‘curved hip’.

She said: “We took her to the doctors who diagnosed her and she was checked over every six months but eventually, they told us that it wasn’t going to get any better and we needed to operate.

“In nine months’ time, Lauryn will be able to play football, dance all night and parachute out of a plane if she wants to.

“She’s getting more confident and finding that clothes fit her better and it’s just wonderful to see.

“If anybody is facing the same condition, I would highly recommend the surgery to them. It’s given us a fantastic result.”
