CLARETS star Tom Heaton got a shock when health check nurses in Burnley town centre said he was “overweight”.

But the goalkeeper’s pride was restored seconds later when his waist measurement was taken, as the nurses concluded that he must be “carrying a lot of muscle”.

The 28-year-old dropped into the Cancer Awareness Roadshow in St James Street, where shoppers could have a BMI test to find out whether their weight is within a healthy range.

Nurse Chris Falkner, of Cancer Research UK, said Tom was classed as overweight on the initial measurement, but when she measured his waist as 33-and-a-half inches, she told the Premier League glovesman: “I would say you’re carrying a lot of muscle so you’re okay. So don’t be worried about about losing weight.”

The roadshow aims to raise awareness of how people can reduce their risk of cancer and spot signs and symptoms at an early stage, as well as providing support to help people make positive changes to their lifestyle.

Obesity is associated with several different types of cancer.

Tom said: “It’s great to have somewhere in Burnley where people can come to have a chat to a nurse if they have any concerns or get some information, and then get pointed in the right direction if they need any further help.”

The roadshow is due at Charter Walk Shopping Centre today.
