Vintage Claret Hartley doesn't let derby draw spoil his big day

BIRTHDAY TREATS: Hartley Eastwood partied despite the derby result BIRTHDAY TREATS: Hartley Eastwood partied despite the derby result

VINTAGE Claret Hartley Eastwood, who turned 106 yesterday, said a Burnley win would have made his birthday even better.

Mr Eastwood, who is believed to be one of the 10 oldest people in England, wore his Claret and Blue shirt at a special birthday party.

The former weaver was born in North Street, Burnley, in 1907, and has lived in Burnley and Nelson all his life.

Yesterday Mr Eastwood was treated to a buffet, music and a visit from the Mayor of Burnley Coun Charles Bullas with other residents at Dove Court Nursing Home, in Shuttleworth Street, Burnley, where he has lived for the past five years.

He said: “I’ve had a nice day. The buffet was lovely and I it was nice to have a visit from the mayor. It was nice to have a derby on my birthday. I have been a Burnley fan since I was young. It would have made my birthday even better if they had won. I hope I live to see Burnley win against Blackburn again.”

He will have seen some good matches, some good times and some bad but he still sticks with his club. I am only 68 but like me he will remember when fans respected each other and there was no vile chanting, no damage to grounds or transport and we could all walk to match having a chat. Some sections of both sets of fans yesterday were disgusting. Sorry to bring this up on your story Hartley but I know you will understand, I am really happy you had a fantastic day. Here's to next time.

Congratulations from a Rover! I'm sure Hartley remembers when you could walk to the game without some sections of both fans using the game as an excuse for violence and aggression.

Still, a great atmosphere yesterday and well done to most fans on both sides who were able to enjoy the game, contribute to a cracking atmosphere and all without having to resort to idiocy!

Most of us have our heads screwed on....

I remember my grandad saying exactly the same thing until my dad showed him an article from the Bury Times (honestly can't remember when but it would of been the 40s or 50s) which reported gangs of youths going on a rampage through Bury after they had lost a match. Boys will be boys it appears :)
.
Regardless happy birthday Mr Eastwood.

Happy Birthday Mr Eastwood.

Don't worry - you'll no doubt see a Burnley win next year because we'll still be in the same division (hopefully anyway)!
