SERVICES are set to take place across East Lancashire to remember the sacrifices made by servicemen and women.

Royal British Legion members are out in towns across the area selling poppies to raise money for veterans and their families.

Legion members will turn out in full force for services this weekend, the culmination of months of work celebrating the association’s 90th anniversary.

Civic leaders will also be attending the Remembrance events and have urged residents to take part.

The Mayor of Burnley Coun David Heginbotham said: “The most important three words are Lest We Forget.

"It is of paramount importance to this country that we have remembrance ceremonies.

“We must never forget those who suffered and died for us and those who continue to do that in Afghanistan.

"The people who come as immigrants to this country must be brought to understand how important it is that we honour people who have given their lives to protect us.”

Councillor Kate Hollern, leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “We must never forget those who have given their lives or have been injured whilst fighting for our country.

"These brave servicemen and women deserve our utmost respect and I hope the borough comes together, like in previous years, to help us mark this poignant time of year.”

Councillor Karimeh Foster, Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, said: “It is an honour to be part of the Remembrance Services.

"It is important that we never forget the sacrifices our armed forces have made and we continue to show our support for those who are still fighting.”
