Free electric blanket checks in Blackburn

A FREE electric blanket testing day will be held this month to ensure the winter warmers are safe to use before the cold nights close in.

There are still a few appointments left on the day, being held by Age UK Blackburn with Darwen in partnership with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council’s public protection service and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

Free replacements will be handed out for those which are unsafe, limited to one per person.

A specialist firm will be available on Wednesday, October 31, at Blackburn Rovers’ Ewood Park stadium.

Vicky Shepherd, Age UK’s deputy chief officer, said: “Research has shown that nationally each year 5,000 house fires start as a direct result of faulty blankets, with those people aged 64 or over being the most at risk.

“Blankets over 10 years old are a particular high risk.

“Even if you have started to use your blanket this year we would still strongly advise people to make the effort to get it checked.”

The testing day will run from 9am until 4.30pm on an appointment-only basis.
