Tributes to renowned Whalley motorsport photographer

TRIBUTES have been paid to a renowned motorsport photographer and ‘devoted family man’ who has died at the age of 49.

Robin Haworth, who lived all his life in Whalley, died in Royal Preston Hospital on October 10 after six months of battling a tumour on his pituitary gland.

Mr Haworth leaves a 17-year-old daughter Sophie, son Oscar, 12, parents David and Nancy and brothers Simon, Matthew and Christopher.

A former Ribblesdale High School pupil, he worked for Atkinson’s machinery company in Whalley and later the family greengrocery firm DND Pendle Valley Produce in Montague Street, Clitheroe.

Mr Haworth had a passion for photography, which he pursued professionally He was a member of Clitheroe Camera Club, had his own wedding photography business and worked as a freelance press photographer for the Chorley and Blackpool Citizens and the Lancashire Telegraph.

His main passion was motorsport and he travelled throughout the country picturing karting and rallying events.

He contributed to several motorsport magazines, making dozens of friends while pursuing his hobby.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Sylvia Ragnall, his father’s partner, said: “Robin was a loving, gentle man, who was simply devoted to his children.

“He took pride in their every achievement and was loved by many.

“One thing I have heard from all who knew him was his good-natured personality and fun sense of humour. It’s terrible to lose him so soon.”

Neil Johnson, Lancashire Telegraph picture editor, said: “All of Robin’s ex-colleagues and friends were deeply saddened to hear of his sudden death at such a young age.

“Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with his family.

“Robin was a skilled photographer who worked with distinction on many of our newspaper titles.

“Above all Robin will be remembered for his boundless enthusiasm and infectious good humour which lifted the spirits of all around him.”

A thanksgiving service will be held for Mr Haworth at noon on Wednesday, October 24 at All Saints’ Church, Pendleton.
