Darwen car wash applies for retrospective planning permission

A CAR wash that was criticised for allowing water to spill on to the main road has applied for retrospective planning permission.
Owner Ashif Chand has submitted an application to change the use of the site on the corner of Mill Gap Street and Bolton Road from a paint show room and storage facility.
Concerns were raised earlier this year about a lack of drainage on the site causing water to run on to the pavement and road.
But Mr Chand has taken some measures in a bid to offset the drainage problems.
A letter of objection has been sent by Monsignor Peter Wilkinson, of the nearby St Joseph’s Church.
He said: “My first concern is to the signage on the corner of this property.
“This sign is unsightly and lowers the tone of the neighbourhood.
“My second concern is the run-off water.
“I realise steps have been taken to reduce this but on numerous occasions I have had to walk off the pavement and on to the road to avoid the waste water.”
Planning officers have recommended the application is approved, on the condition that a scheme of maintenance of drainage is set up within three months.
