Lancashire fire brigade warning over giant lighters after blaze

FIREFIGHTERS and Trading Standards are warning people not to use 'giant' cigarette lighters after one set fire to the arm of a settee.

The fabric burst into flame when the six-inch novelty self-ignited after being used to light a cigarette.

County Councillor Albert Atkinson, deputy leader of Lancashire County Council, said: "Clearly these oversized lighters pose a potential fire hazard and can cause serious injury so I would urge anybody who has one to stop using it straight away.

"We would also ask reailers who still have stocks to immediately remove them from sale."

Self ignited? Do they have a design flaw we should be aware of or is this a typical scare reaction to a non event?

I will assume there is nothing to be worried about for the time being.

On some of these lighters, not all, there is a fault with the fuel valve not closing correctly. This leads to the flame not being fully extinguished properly and it is this that causes the problem.
I think the term, 'self-ignited', is a bit misleading and 'remained lit albeit it with a small flame' would be nearer the mark.

Serves them right anyway. Shouldn't be smoking in the house and never near furniture.

Woolywords - If it their own house, why can they not smoke in it? I am a non smoker myself but feel that people have a right to smoke in their own property because, face it, they are not allowed to smoke anywhere else these days!!
