Fury over approval of 55 homes near Whalley

A PLANNING application for a controversial housing development near Whalley has been given the go-ahead.

The plans, for 55 homes and a 50-bed nursing home on land at Lawsonsteads Farm, to the east of Clitheroe Road, had been thrown out by councillors in July.

But a re-submitted application, which was put together by Indigo Planning on behalf of developers the Commercial Estates Group in a bid to meet the demand for housing in the borough, was approved at a meeting of Ribble Valley Council’s planning and development committee.

The company first submitted an application for 300 homes, the nursing home and a school for the site in February 2011, but those plans were rejected.

Ribble Valley Council’s proposed core strategy indicates that the borough needs to build around 200 houses every year up until 2020 in order to keep up with increased pressure.

But Nick Walker, from the Save Whalley Village Action Group, said the group’s members believed their concerns had been ignored.

He said: “The decision of Ribble Valley’s planning committee to approve an application to build on the Lawsonstead site in Whalley village is to be deplored.

“The loss of this site will damage the unique village landscape for ever.

“The development of this site will increase growing traffic problems, increase the risk of flooding from surface water drainage and increase the pressure on school places.

“We fear that the process of urban sprawl, already under way, will be accelerated by this decision.”

Me too good call 2 for 5p. It could have a calming effect on some of the less fortunate. After all they have Calderstones ! Carn't see what all the fuss is about ! One or two ex Shaddies surely carn't do any harm ? As for Chammy it's got to be good for him ! More windows to clean for his Chammy ! Trade for him up Shad at the mo must be a bit slow ! My wife kept nagging and nagging about us going for a drive in the Ribble Valley and finding a rural car park somewhere so she could try dogging as she'd read an article about it in the LT. I was extremely miffed about the idea but reluctantly agreed to her giving it a try. She parked up in a lay-by and I went through the protocols with her. I told her to leave the car engine running, switch off the headlights and disable the interior light. She was to fully recline the car seats, lay back and I would hide behind in a nearby bush to keep an eye on her. I asked her if she had taken it all in, she nodded but then said, "What's the hosepipe for again ?"
