Phone scam ‘line test’ warning to Rishton residents

COUNCILLORS in Rishton have warned residents to be on the alert for a phone scam affecting the area.

Councillors Ken Moss, Harry Grayson, and Clare Cleary, said scammers were ringing pretending to be engineers testing mobile phone lines.

However, they then talked the victim into allowing access to their details.

The fraudsters are said to be using a device in which once you press #90, or #09, they can access the SIM card and make calls at the victim’s expense.

Coun Ken Moss said: “If you receive a phone call on your mobile from any person, saying that he, or she, is a company engineer, and you have to press certain numbers, end the call immediately without pressing any numbers.

“Inform as many colleagues, relatives, and friends as you can, to stop it.”

Nice to see that the councillors have nothing better to do than propagate Urban Myths. This is a hoax that has been doing the rounds for over 10 years. A quick google or check on sites such as Snopes.com would have saved them a lot of time. I usually delete such junk mail... so I have cut out this story from my paper and shredded it which has the same effect.

They were told last week it was a ten year old email, yet still they get it published. Shows how much notice is taken of the general voting public!

Since it came from the East Lancashire Police Authority we were mindful to believe it is true. If nothing comes of it then the only crime is the use of a few inches in the LT.
