There's nothing fishy about East Lancashire's chip shop food!

CHIPPIES in East Lancashire can be trusted for their honesty when it comes to serving up the best types of fish, a survey has found.

Lancashire Trading standards experts checked on 30 shops across the county to make sure what they were serving up matched the menu.

All four tested in Ribble Valley got top marks but in Chorley one mixed up cod and haddock and another was ‘found to have served a species which wasn't on the menu and couldn't be recognised’ by county council expert analysts.

However, unlike other areas of the country, no-one was selling cheaper varieties such as panga, river cobbler and pollock and claiming they were more expensive fish.

In Blackburn, Holly Tree Fish and Chips on Pinewood give customers asking for “fish and chips” haddock, but also offer cod and plaice for an extra 20 pence.

Owner Mike Rose said: “We also offer silver hake when we can get it. That was the original wartime favourite in Lancashire and some customers still ask or it.

“We don’t sell other cheaper fish. The law says you can sell any species as fish but have to tell the customer if they ask. We make clear on our board which varieties we offer.”

The Belfield Fish Bar in Parliament Street, Burnley Wood, offer a similar choice with haddock as standard, and cod, plaice and silver hake on offer for an extra 15 pence.

In Nelson, Holt’s Fish and Chip Shop does not stock cod but sells haddock as its staple, silver hake for an extra 60 pence and battered mackerel for customers who like a tasty and distinctive dish at just £1.95.

And The Crawshawbooth Fish and Chip Shop in Burnley Road is one of the few that still offers cod as the first choice for undecided customers.

Large haddock and plaice are available as an alternative for 15 pence more.

Jeff Ellis’s chippy in Accrington sells haddock but no cod any more and while Kwai Sang of the Waddington Road Chip Shop in Clitheroe sells only haddock which far outstrips his Chinese and other specialties.

Generally speaking chippys in east lancs do not come anywhere near chippys in the 70s and 80s, they are in decline.
No Chippy has ever come even close to lens Chippy ranger street accrington and it was very reasonably priced. There was also a god chip at witton.
