Adam Rogers' mum named Lancashire woman of the year

A BLACKBURN mother whose son was killed by a single punch while trying to break up a fight has been named Lancashire Woman of the Year.

Pat Rogers lost her 24-year-old son Adam in July 2009.

While both Pat and husband Dave were devastated by the loss, they wanted something positive to come out from the tragedy.

They set up the Lancashire Telegraph backed ‘Every Action Has Consequences’ charity and have both worked tirelessly with the police and education establishments to encourage youngsters to discuss the consequences of alcohol-fuelled behaviour.

Adam, a Padiham Ladies’ football coach, had been acting as a peacemaker in the incident when he was punched once and fell to the floor, hitting his head on the pavement.

Pat, a retired assistant principal of St Mary’s College, Blackburn, said: “It is great news that the work of the Consequences campaign has been recognised. The charity is run by myself, Dave and a just a couple of others.

“Recognition like this is great for the charity as it will help us spread our message to more people.

“It was a lovely evening and it meant a lot to be nominated alongside five other inspirational nominees.”

The 23rd Lancashire Woman of the Year awards were held at the Mytton Fold Hotel, Langho, on Wednesday.

Guests enjoyed a three course meal, raffle, speaker and presentation of the award.

Debbie Gregory, committee member for the awards, said: “It was a hard decision to make as we had very worthy nominations but the committee decided that Pat had put her grief and expertise to something useful, that she could make a difference to young peoples lives and the fact that Adam hadn't died in vain.”

The Lancashire Woman of the Year award is an annual event to recognise a woman who has given more than 100 per cent of her time, money, effort and hard work to their chosen charity or cause.
