Ribble Valley villages get grants for makeovers

JUST under £100,000 worth of grants are to be given out to improve Ribble Valley villages.

Ribble Valley Council have approved grants totalling £98,734 to enhance village amenities, including sports facilities and community centres. Earlier this year the council invited groups to bid for a share in the funding and 49 organisations applied, requesting a total of £306,000.

A total of 19 applications were successful. Projects which have been given the go ahead include £10,000 spent on insulation and refurbishment of Gisburn Festival Hall.

The Little Green Bus scheme will spend £2,500 to purchase a newer minibus for the Ribble Valley Community and save on maintenance costs. The Scheme project relies on members signing up to use a range of transport services, such as dial-a-ride and community cars.

Manager Donna Atkinson said: “It means an awful lot to us. Without us, many elderly people would not be able to get out at all. We are the only group in Lancashire that buys their own transport and does this on our own. We are very grateful.”

Also £10,000 will be spent on a floodlit multi-use games area in Whalley Whalley councillor Joyce Holgate said: “It is a facility that’s very much needed in the village.

“It’s lacking at the moment and I support this project.”

  • A community car park at St Leonards Church Balderstone, £2,500

@paperboy70

Are you sure its being funded by council tax as that usually gets spent anywhere but where people have actually paid it in.
