Car overturned in Darwen

A CAR overturned in Darwen this morning.

It happened during the morning rush-hour, in Roman Road, Eccleshill, causing tailbacks up towards the Pothouse area.

The male driver, who was the only person in the car, was helped out by passers-by.

His black Vauxhall Corsa was on its roof when police were called just after 8.30am.

An ambulance was called but he was only thought to be suffering from minor injuries and shock.

Police were still investigating the cause of the incident.

I bet I can guess the cause of the accident.

This was on the major diversion route from Darwen to Blackburn.

No effort was made to keep the road open and let cars pass on one side.

Do the police not understand that if you divert cars onto a road, then you need to either open that road as quickly as possible or redirect traffic?

What you don't know is, that we spend thousands upon thousands on a road traffic unit each financial year and in the current climate of cuts, they have to justify their existence to the public. So having half a dozen people stand around doing nothing for a few hours is a good way of showing the public that they are getting value for money.

If a driver looses control of a vehicle on a worn out road surface then overturns, they have an investigation to make sure that the driver is at fault and not the local authority.

Ah that explains all those overturned cars that I see daily.... of course the worn out surface flips them lightweight cars over.....

Presumably if it was "speeding" that caused the car to overturn, then hopefully the driver will suffer a double wammy from the speed camera - providing it was switched on. The "worn out road" theory is rubbish. The camber at Goosehouse bridge is a bit iffy but a driver who is awake (oh it was 8.30am) would be aware of that or should be!! The key issue here is the fact this road was being used as a diversion what with gas works, road resurfacing etc on the A666, culvert work at Eccleshill. Every time there is a problem on the A666 the minor roads cannot cope with the weight of traffic. Serious consideration needs to be given to a ring road to relieve the A666 through the town - and before the 'it will take trade away' lobyists start moaning this is little different to the existing town centre bypass that already exists. Watery lane / Roman Road upgrade would be the place to start!

Councillor Duncan,
Using the Goosehouse Road was the obvious choice to relieve traffic on the A666 until some bright spark decided to do the repairs by the motorway link road at the same time!! You suggest Watery Lane/Roman Road as a bypass. I made this suggestion some years ago and the residents didn't half come down on me!! Not on my patch in other words. It is a difficult situation at the best of times but to do repairs on two vital roads at the same time is madness....

Even better.... when Councillors pass all these industrial sites why not ensure the road networks and direct links from the motorway are there first !

The recent roadworks at every main site going into Darwen have proved that all roads are well used and car users who pay their road tax deserve well maintaned roads.
Guide is now akin to the m25 at peak times and takes me 20 mins-half an hour to get a mile to work! I have to have my car to use at work or would walk or cycle (I sometimes do when I come home and leave my car at work to collect later) Cheers developers and Council for approving! Cant wait for he next estate and hotel to be built....icing on the cake,,,,,,and of course more money in the Council coffers.
