2:48pm Tuesday 25th September 2012 in News
MEMBERS of Blackburn with Darwen’s Asian population are being urged to attend a health education event being run by Diabetes UK.
Working with the borough’s Clinical Commissioning Group, the charity has laid on a free event from 9am to 4.30pm tomorrow at Bangor Street Community Centre, Norwich Street.
The aim is to help find the 1,000 people who live across Blackburn with Darwen who have Type 2 diabetes and do not know it.
Type 2 diabetes is up to six times more common in people of South Asian descent and from other Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.
Julie Byron, Diabetes UK North West regional manager, said: “This event is open to the people of Blackburn and Darwen who have concerns about diabetes and their health.
“Research shows that if you are from an South Asian background you are at increase risk of developing Type 2 diabetes however, awareness of diabetes is particularly low within this community and some people are living with diabetes for up to 10 years without being diagnosed.
“Late diagnosis increases the risk of complications.”

As with other genetic disorders and diseases the more people are inbred then the more likely they are to inherit these kind of conditions.
Its hardly surprising that the Asian sub continent has a higher proportion of genetic problems as they have more children from closer relatives than most communities due to cousin marriages after cousin marriages after cousin marriages
