Blackburn reveller had no memory of car crash

A 21-YEAR-OLD man could not explain why he had gone out in his car after returning from a night out by taxi.

Blackburn magistrates heard Matthew Quigley crashed into a stone wall during his late night trip and then drove off.

But when police caught up with him several hours later he owned up to what he had done and admitted considering the ‘hip flask’ defence.

“To his credit he decided that honesty was the best policy and he deserves credit for that,” said Neil White, prosecuting.

Quigley, of Montreal Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and failing to stop after an accident.

He was fined £300 with £95 costs and banned from driving for 12 months.

Richard Prew, defending, said his client was still at a loss to explain why having come home by taxi he then got in his car .

“He has no recollection of the accident itself during which he suffered a head injury,” said Mr Prew.

“His car was written off.”
