Winners announced in Lancashire tourism awards
2:00pm Saturday 15th September 2012 in News
A TIRELESS tour guide and storyteller, a country pub and a luxury hotel were winners in the Lancashire Tourism Awards.
Simon Entwistle was given a special recognition award for helping to establish the county’s dark tourism product, with his ghost and heritage tours across East Lancashire.
This year especially, he has worked to raise the profile of the 400th Anniversary of the Pendle Witch Trials, which has generated substantial media attention.
Simon was presented with his accolade by the chairman of the tourism board, chef Paul Heathcote .
The other winners were The Millstone at Mellor, which was given the title of the county’s Tourism Pub of the Year and Northcote , Langho, which won Small Hotel of the Year.
Mr Entwistle said: “It’s certainly a very pleasant surprise to win this award and very unexpected.
“I do feel very honoured, due to the excellent candidates in my category.
“Michael Ranson, leader of Ribble Valley council, was the first person to congratulate me with a warm handshake.
“That did mean a lot to me, as I am very proud of the area and the many tours I conduct.”
Anson Bolton, who runs The Millstone at Mellor with wife Sarah, said he believed the reason for his award was the pub being ‘the hub of the village’.
He said: “It’s a real honour for the staff here. We try to be an organic part of the village with many events such as the Jubilee street party and other events which bring the community together.”
The event was held at the Guild Hall, Preston, the first organised by Marketing Lancashire, the new company promoting the county as a great place to visit and invest in.
The evening, which saw 16 trophies handed to a range of businesses across the county, was hosted by designer, Wayne Hemingway.
Another East Lancashire successes included Hackings Caravan Park, Clitheroe, which was highly commended.
