Hyndburn charity fears £6k bill for potholes

A HYNDBURN animal charity may have to pay out thousands of pounds after its access road has been left ‘riddled’ with potholes.

Because of the recent floods, the road leading to Only Foals and Horses in Oswaldtwistle will cost £6,000 to fix.

The animal sanctuary currently has 95 horses, ponies and donkeys at its Redshell Lane base.

But it doesn’t have the money to resurface the road.

John Noble has been a volunteer at the charity, which is located off Haslingsden Old Road, for five years.

Along with his fellow colleagues, John is now is appealing for help because the road is currently unadopted by the council and visitor numbers are falling.

He said: “We have been told that it’s our problem and we have to fix it.

“We are losing out on visitors because it is the only access that we have got. It’s the main road and nobody wants to come up here. We have gone from having two or three hundred people coming to visit each month to about 50.”

The farm opened in Oswaldtwistle in 1991 and aims to rescue, rehabilitate and rest the many needy animals. The road belongs to the farmer who owns the land but Mr Noble has been unable to contact him.

He said: “We are not responsible for the road and there is no way that we can afford this kind of money.

“We use it every day for transporting the animals, and people’s cars are being damaged.

“We rely on donations and visitors to help keep us afloat.

“But because the road is riddled with potholes we are suffering.”

The farmer is responsible or any residents / businesses that have frontages on to said road if it is unadopted.. also you have little chance of getting this fixed for free unless some donor stumps up the costs, but if you do manage to get the council to fix it, I will be using it as an example to try and get the one fixed here!

If the road belongs to the farmer that owns the land, he should be responsible for the repairs. Surely he should be made to pay for it and not the sanctuary.
This charity does a lot of work helping the animals that are kept there and shouldn't be made to pay for something they do not own.

why do none of the animals get re-homed or sold onto to good homes once better and rehabilitated?

i have a feeling its not in their interest to lose any of the animals???

Maybe you should have a drive up there and see for yourself, it will open your eyes all the good and hard work the volunteers do.
Also you will see the state of some of the animals and why they cannot be rehomed, a lot of them are living out there last days at the sanctuary.

Oh and you say they get enough through donations do you know this has a fact! they don't get anywhere near enough to cover for overheads.

So before you open your mouth try opening your eyes first.

I think ste.g has got a point about in there own intres.
I wish a charity would pay for me to live out in the country on a farm.
I think there are some serious questions to be asked
Who owns the land
who pays the council tax
Is a wage being drawn by any of the people connected to the charity
