9:00pm Tuesday 11th September 2012 in News
By Vanessa Cornall, Crime reporter
The crime took place on Eanam Bridge
A TEENAGER who had just left a mosque was punched in the face by a thief who stole her handbag.
The 17-year-old has been left with a suspected fractured eye socket, swelling and bruising to her face after the incident on Saturday.
At the time the girl was wearing full Asian dress including a veil.
She described the experience as “terrifying”.
The victim, who wshes to remain anonymous, said: “I was walking towards the bus stop after attending the Tauheedar mosque.
“As I got on to Eanam I passed a lad sat in a bus stop but didn’t really think anything of it.
“Not long after I passed him I reached the canal bridge and all of a sudden I was aware of someone running towards me.
“Before I could turn round I felt a punch to the face and my handbag was snatched.
“I was so scared. Luckily a taxi stopped and a woman got out to help me call the police.” The student from Accrington was taken to hospital shortly after the incident at 12.30pm.
Doctors suspect she has a fractured eye socket but cannot tell the full extent of her injuries until the swelling and bruising goes down. A police spokesman said: “This was a vicious attack on a vulnerable woman walking alone. I appeal for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area on Saturday lunchtime to call us on 101.”
The attacker is described as 5ft 7ins tall, of skinny build and wearing casual clothing.

What's next, mugging nuns?
What kind of a dirty rotten, spineless, coward of a man, would stoop so low as to mug a devout woman of peace?
Have you no moral values at all?
Over the years, I have written some terrible things about Islam and it's followers but have never come to blows with any, even the one's that know my real name. So when I say that I hope you get better soon, it's an heartfelt emotion. What was done to you is entirely wrong and I hope you can find it within your heart to forgive them, much as Christians do. Some things are just not done, and this is one of them.
Personally, I'd string him up by his dangly bits off Frecklton St bridge but they won't let me..

As far as this incident goes, it was nothing more than a targeted robbery of a woman, that so happened to be wearing traditional Islamic garb!
I say 'targeted' as the perpetrator would have Sussed that the victim would find it rather difficult to give chase, or apprehend him!
Personally, i sincerely hope that she gets over this awful episode.

Whilst Muslim people wish to wear a veil, which I respect, it does mean that their "field of vision" is very much restricted. Much the same as a horse wearing blinkers. This makes it so much easier for an attacker to approach you, with a result such as this. The fashion for young people to walk around town with their hood up, also puts them as a very easy target, to hit them from behind. So the CCTV may not see your face, but the robber will find it easy to hit you from behind. Think about it.

My deepest sympathies go out to the girl whose been attacked. Wish you the best of recoveries. However, "TONY" you state, "Whilst Muslim people wish to wear a veil, which I respect, it does mean that their "field of vision" is very much restricted".
I disagree with you. A bikers helmet you can see through it perfectly unless if the material is affecting your eyes. If worn properly, you can do speeds of 70mph on the motorway, whilst having the plastic infront which actually covers your eyes, you can see through it perfecty. With a veil, there is nothing covering the eyes, It's highly unlikely a woman would have her eyes covered. 99% of veil wearers would want to show the shape of there eyes. It's just what you typed did'nt make sense so i thought i'd clarify.

I just wish the next time the mugger decides to choose his vulnerable target he misjudges the ability of the 'victim' and ends up attached to a life saving machine.

One of the many things Islam will teach you is to look at yourself before you cast judgement on others, maybe you could learn a few things from Islam yourself.
