COMPETITORS travelled from as far afield as Melbourne, Kansas and Ohio to ensure that East Lancashire’s World Black Pudding Throwing Championship had a truly international flavour.
And the rivalry among former world champs was just as spicy as at least two former holders of the crown joined hundreds of wannabes outside The Oaks pub in Ramsbottom.
Armed with ‘regulation’ six and seven-eighth ounce horseshoe-shaped delicacies, swaddled in black tights, the aim is to dislodge as many Yorkshire puddings in three attempts.
Local cricketer Steve Pilkington, the last winner at the tournament’s original home at The Corner Pin in Stubbins, had half a dozen or so hurls.
But a local thrower is the new champ, with Alan Cunliffe, 65, of Greenmount, Bury, taking the title.
Acts including the Damien Heakin Band, Lazy Maybees, Celtic Brew, Uke Punk, Point Blank and DJ Mart took part later in ‘Pudstock’, the event’s closing ceremony.
