Blackburn thief claimed he though bike was scrap

A MAN who stole a refuse collector’s bike off the back of his lorry claimed he thought it was scrap.

But Craig Patrick Grant eventually pleaded guilty to theft, and asked Blackburn magistrates to take a further 38 offences into account.

Grant, 40, of Exeter Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to stealing the bike belonging to Mark Walmsley. He was fined £210, which the magistrates set against a day in custody after being told Grant is already serving a custodial sentence.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said the bike was in a cage secured by padlocks as Mr Walmsley was going about his business. He came out of a house and found Grant in possession of his bike and there was a brief struggle.

She said the total value of the offences to be taken into consideration was £1,378.

Liz Parker, defending, said Grant came across the wagon which appeared to be full of rubbish.
