Plea to save Darwen civic society from closure

DARWEN Civic Society needs new members – or it could be wound up.

Bosses of the organisation had planned to shut it down after the 50th anniversary next year.

But a Darwen businessman has jumped on board and wants more people to join him in a bid to keep it going.

Stephen Milligan, who owns the refurbished Holker House business centre in Railway Road and received a civic pride award from the group for his work at the Victorian building, says the civic society needs support.

He said: “It is run by pensioners and they want to take a step back. It needs new people or we will lose it altogether.

“We need a chairman, treasurer and secretary.”

The group meets on the first Thursday of every month at Holker House, from 7pm. Its main aim is to promote the town’s heritage and to reward people who help to improve and maintain it.

The Civic society has organised a number of projects over the years, including the annual photographic competition and the annual sale of Christmas cards.

The group previously held a coffee morning every year, at which civic pride awards were handed out, but at the moment no such event has been planned this year.

Secretary Marilyn Bysh said: “We appreciate Mr Milligan’s help. He wants to bring all the various friends groups and community organisations in the town together under a civic society umbrella.

“I believe that is what Thursday’s meeting will be all about.”

Mrs Bysh said: “We are all elderly. I’m 75 and I’m the baby!

“But it is difficult to find youngsters who are interested in Darwen’s heritage.”

Of course it's difficult to find youngsters interested in "Heritage". To most Heritage means keeping and hanging on to the outmoded and redundant that has long ceased to be of real use at great expense and to the real detriment of progress, because some self important has beens keep looking at the past in the rosy glow of nostalgia.

Without nostalgia we would have nothing to learn from!

We're all a product of everything that has gone before us.

What about involving the feuding historical societies in Darwen?
