ETHEL Howarth takes life at a cruising pace now she is 102.

And with help from the Rosegrove Residents’ Association she took a trip on a canal barge to show it.

Ethel was the star guest as the residents’ association took a two-and-a-half hour cruise from Foulridge Wharf, complete with a pie and peas dinner.

The association arrange different events for the group of pensioners every month, and in September they are set for a trip to see the Blackpool Illuminations.

Brian Parkinson, who helps to run the association, said: “We go out for a meal at least once a month and do different events as well.

“It is a chance for everybody to get together and have a natter. As well as Ethel we have people who are 80 or 90 who come every month.

“We pick up Ethel up every time we go out, she likes to come along and enjoy the events, without them she would just be sat at home and bored.”

Ethel used to live and work in Blackpool but moved to Burnley. She has been a regular with the association for around 10 years.

In October 2009 the residents’ association organised a party to help celebrate her 100th birthday, which was attended by then mayor Coun John Harbour.

Ethel sails to her 103rd birthday in October.
