Darwen's main road faces more delays

MORE traffic misery lies ahead for drivers on the main road through Darwen.

A high-risk gas main is being replaced by the National Grid along the A666 in Earcroft, meaning new temporary lights will be in place over the next six weeks.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area, and advance warning signs will go up next week.

Drivers already face a number of measures along the busy road:

• Hollins Grove Street will be closed this weekend and there will be temporary traffic lights on the A666.
• Temporary traffic lights between Pitville Street and Hollins Grove Street between this Saturday and September 3.
•  Temporary lights from St Albans Road to the Anchor Pub between September 3 and 24.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has also warned that roads will be very busy as the football season gets under way, with Blackburn Rovers playing on Wednesday, August 22, Saturday, August 25, Tuesday, September 18 and Friday, September 21.

Alternative routes will be signposted via Hardman Way, Marsh House Lane, Roman Road, Stopes Brow and Greenbank Terrace to junction five of the M65.

Blackburn with Darwen executive member for regeneration Coun Dave Harling said: “We have insisted that National Grid do as much as possible to reduce disruption and manage the traffic.

“We have insisted on weekend and late working as well as the use of spotters who control the flow of traffic through the temporary traffic lights.

“We have also insisted that they contact local businesses and residents to advise them about the works.

“We have reopened Lower Eccleshill Road in an effort to alleviate any queues.”
