AN East Lancashire Cricket club’s bid to raise £300,000 for new changing rooms has been boosted by a £50,000 grant from Sport England.
Read Cricket Club has been trying to raise the funds for three years in a bid to develop the club for the future.
And Sport England this week announced the club has been awarded £50,000 as part of the Places People Play facilities fund.
Chairman Steve Lowes said: “This is a significant contribution to the funding required for the project which overall will cost nearly £300,000.
“Like many sports today, cricket has become more open with both sexes and all ages likely to play alongside each other. Having been built in an earlier era, Read CC ’s facilities are wholly inadequate.
“With just one set of showers, which are situated within the men’s toilets, and open changing rooms, it was impossible for women and kids to change at the ground.”
Read Cricket Club has four junior sides and is one of a handful of clubs in Lancashire with a women’s cricket team.
Mr Lowes was delighted to have received the money from Sport England.
He said: “It’s taken a lot of hard work securing the funding for this project and I’d like to thank Howard Marks, who led the team, for his persistence and positive approach to achieving our goal.
“There were times when we thought we would never get there, but Howard remained confident throughout.”
The project also includes a recreation room for the club’s crown green bowlers and a secure workshop and machine store.
The club needs to raise a further £100,000.
