Darwen club raider had beer in mind

A MAN caught red-handed trying to break into a former working men’s club said he was hoping to find some beer that had been left behind.

Matthew James Benet, 21, of Sandringham Road, Darwen, admitted burglary at Highfield WMC with intent to steal. He was given 24 hours at an attendance centre and told to pay £85 costs.

Rachael Griffith, defending, said that as her client was walking home, he decided to ‘go for a nosey’.

“He could see a fridge and thought there might be some beer left over,” she said.
