Stonework that fell from the building
THE owner of a takeaway, whose premises collapsed into the street, has said it is unclear how long it will take to get the business back up and running.
Around 30 hungry people were evacuated from Sahad, in Blackburn Road, Accrington, after people outside spotted the first floor starting to bow.
The person living above the shop along with those living either side were also evacuated by firefighters.
Police attended the incident and closed off a section of Blac-kburn Road between Portland Street and Lang Street.
Less than an hour after the call at around 5.30pm on Monday, a large section of the first floor outside wall collapsed into the street.
Mohammed Masood, owner of the takeaway and the flat above, said work to sandblast and repoint the building was being carried out by contractors shortly before the building collapsed.
He said: “I was so worried about what was going to happen and if the stones were going to fall on somebody.
“My business is closed now, but I am not worried about the money I am losing, I am just worried about my premises, my workers and my neigh-bours We don’t know when he will be allowed back.”
Hyndburn Fire Station manager, Tim Murrell, said: “We initially got the call stating that an upstairs of a building was starting to bow around 5.30pm.
“After we evacuated the shop and surrounding residents the front face of the building came crashing down. If we hadn’t evacuated and those bricks had fallen on to somebody they would have easily been killed.”
Last night scaffolders supported by Lancashire Fire and Rescue secured the building. Police closed off Blackburn Road between Portland Street and Lang Street.

And ye, I did wonder about the comment regarding removing the timber for re-pointing. Since when did this happen? I can safely that getting your house repointed would be a much more expensive job if structural work like that had to be done! The timbers would only be removed if they were being replaced
