maybe this venue needs to look for NEW "Senior Arena management", do they just sit in the office all day, doing nothing?

after all how could this notice be on public view for 5 days and yet they knew nothing about it? it`s not a big building!

Maybe it should just say 'no troublemakers'. It would mean pretty much the same thing. Anyway, I didn't think that 'traveller' is a different race of people. If it said 'no Irish' or 'no Gypsies' then yes, it would be racist. Ultimately, the owners reserve the right to let in who they want.

The Management of ANY business should have the right to refuse to admit whoever they like, if it is considered that to let such people in is to the detriment of the operation of the business or the enjoyment of others. In my mind this should include groups of people as well as individuals whose well documented behaviour is known to result in problems. Anyone else seen signs at the entrance to Public Houses on matchdays that read "Home fans only"? But, thanks to the PC brigade, this is not to be. Does this mean that farmers in and around Appleby can't erect signs that say "No Travellers"? Anyone who has had first hand experience of how this section of the so called community operate, will have nothing but sympathy for the Manager concerned. It would even be risky to call a Management meeting to covertly operate a defined admissions policy, as it only takes one do-gooder in the ranks to sound the alarm. Why not make the Ice Arena a Members Only Club, then they could vet the applicants and refuse membership to whoever they felt was undesirable? Many comments that should be made, would like to be made, but can't be made because of the restrictions placed on the freedom of speech of the indigenous populous of England, will stifle comments on this particular topic. I would be surprised if this post survives the censor.

Dito... and yes.... I did feel offended, being stereo-typed doesn't feel good for any recipient. What they've done is wrong, particularly as it seems to have been targeted at children.

These people are not a race and therefore cannot be discriminated against on these grounds. They are a ground of people who have made a lifestyle choice. For such a small "community" they seem to cause controversy and upset people wherever they drop anchor. Theft and anti social behaviour is rife within their group, they illegally occupy land that does not belong to them and leave a disgraceful mess when they leave. Only earlier this week there was a story detailing how much it costs local councils to clean up after them.
Yes they do have a tarnished name in society but they do not do themselves any favours.

It's all well and good Mr Hughie Smith questioning the legality of this sign but he fails to appreciate that members of the "community" that he speaks for were responsible for unacceptable levels of anti social behaviour which undoubtedly would have caused upset and offence to the majority of decent people trying to use the facilities.

It is not a question of race it's a question of scumbag anti social behaviour regardless of which slice of the social pie you are from. On this occasion the pie is traveller flavour.

No sympathy for the travelling community, they are first class troublemakers. If anybody has gone into a pub when these scum are in they'll know what I mean. Travellers = scum.

How is "no travelers" racist? Our country doesn't yet leglislate against those that choose to marginalise themselves - be it those who ride bikes, those who have long hair, those who choose to travel. Whether this discrimination should be leglislated against is a moot point.

Fact is, the management have the right to refuse admission - putting up the sign was perhaps rather on the dumb side - especially since some of the target audience probably couldn't read it anyway :)

Once of a day It would have Meant Commercial Travellers ie salesmen or Hawkers, And would have been understandable , but Today one needs to be careful with signs

Perhaps if various councils and police forces around England grew some testicles and made these scumbags obey the law then we'd be alright.

I believe the sign has now been removed and replaced with a more appropriate one: 'No Pikeys'.

It seems quite obvious to me that this sign is meant to say 'no travellers cheques'. The cheques bit has either been cut off or is covered by the widow frame.

This looks likely as the typed signed, also shown in the picture, says something about no longer accepting personal cheques.

These people are'nt travellers, they can't be, they live in the same place all the time, cause havoc in the local pubs till the're barred, rip slates off thwaites empire theatre, leave their shyte all over the place which has been well documented throughout the country, are a law unto themselves. This is just a suggestion but why don't they buy houses, get jobs, pay taxes, abide by the law and become part of a fixed community in which they can integrate?
....and don't tell me they can't afford houses, some of the caravans they live in and cars they own probably would cost as much as a modest house.

I think we are all missing the point here, as an employer and a provider of services to the public, the Ice Arena has a duty of care !
They should be able to take all reasonable steps to protect those people.

Cant blame the ice arena at all. I was there the other week when a group of these 'travellers' where in attendance and their behaviour, language and abuse of the public and staff was disgusting. Some of the language you would'nt repeat to your worst enemy. Not to mention the threats of violence and general appalling behaviour that followed. The poor staff at the rink should not have to deal with that kind of thing. Putting a sign up probably wasnt the best idea, but can you really blame them? It's about time society in general stood up to these disgusting vermin and showed them that their animal like behaviour is not acceptable and wont be tolerated.

Thankfully only a few meetings with these feral chimps, but I have not had one single good experience with them. Furthermore there's not one person I know who has had anything good to say about them. Utter scum.
