6,000 trees felled on outskirts of Darwen

SIX thousand trees have been cut down at a beauty spot on the outskirts of Darwen after a health and safety survey.

A 12-hectare site beside the A666 near the Green Arms Road junction has been cleared in the last month by United Utilities.

And police and councillors said the felling programme would have the added benefit of discouraging strangers from meeting up for sex at the known 'dogging' hotspot.

To minimise the impact on the local wildlife, park rangers carried out the felling outside the bird breeding season.

And wildlife from the 20-metre strip where the tree felling took place would move to the wood behind, the firm said.

United Utilities stressed that those cut down were commercial trees.

A spokesman for United Utilities said: “They were old and at risk of falling into the road causing an accident.

“Following a health and safety survey, a license was applied for and granted through the Forestry Commission to fell them.

“We are re-planting the area with natural broad leaf trees."

Sergeant Mark Wilson of Darwen Neighbourhood Policing team, said the tree felling would help reduce incidents of 'dogging'.

He said: “It’s an on-going problem and very worrying for members of the public.

“It’s far too early to tell if cutting the trees back has had any impact on the dogging situation, but we’ll be paying regular attention to the area.”

Ward councillor Jean Rigby, who is also chair of the West Pennine Moors area management committee, said the trees were planted after the Second World War.

She said: "The area will be replanted with native species that in 20 years, people will see the benefit of.

“I’m more than happy that this management is being carried out, and it has a double whammy in terms of the sexual behaviour.

“I’ve heard anecdotally that since the trees have been cleared, it’s quietened down a lot.”

Coun Colin Rigby said: “It’s essential work that United Utilities are carrying out, and cutting the trees back also works as a deterrent to people who go dogging.”

But Terry Hardman, who owns an engineering company in Darwen, and travels past the clearance site every day, said the work had 'absolutely devastated the area'.

“There was a massive forest that’s just been reduced to open space. Surely that can’t be good for the environmental situation?", he said.

Brian Jackson of Friends of the Earth, said: “To remove thousands and thousands of mature trees is absurd.

“The conifer trees in this area are very valuable in providing windbreaks and attracting rainfall to the area."

How do conifers attract rainfall? Perhaps it explains the bloody awful weather. Best take a chainsaw to neighbours conifers........

I often park my car near these woods and meet all kinds of interesting people up there. Recently I have become so familiar with some of the people there, I flash my lights and we go for a walk in the woods. How am I supposed to do this now?! This is a disgraceful decision.

Completely agree. Lots of trees have been felled south of Belmont near the Scout road/Horwich turn off. Absolutely Jack Zipp to do with H&S and trees falling in the road.

My observations are that the bigger trees on the outskirts of the plantations have been felled, because those left standing are noticeably thinner.

Yes it does have a look of devastaion about it, but these trees were planted for their value as timber, not to make the countryside look pretty. Some of them have reached maturity and it's hardly surprising that they are now being felled.

Why can nobody handle the truth?

Where will all the gays and strays go now? Maybe they should go to parks where kids play.

It would have made more sense to get rid of the doggers, and to preserve the trees.

Health and Safety lol - would have thought these trees should have been cut down and sold often (not read article in full yet) BUT and it is a BIG BUT the trees along the side of the road should have stayed and been maintained regularly. If the trees couldn't be kept then sharp deviation and sharp bend sign should have been installed on both sides of dogging lane PRIOR to the cut down. I already see two bumper since the cutting back of trees.
An advanced driver will be looking for i.e. lamp posts, houses, trees e.t.c to see the line of the road and so should the average driver but any driver can see a line of trees close by indicates the road can not be in that direction. The signs need installing immediatly by the council.

And what a mess they've made ! It looks like a Panzer Division has stormed across the whole area en route for Moscow !!
I saw the "loggers" at work ( NB - that's "loggers" and NOT "doggers" ) and they were so bad at their job my first thought was that it was an illegal "raid" by criminals hoping to clear the area before someone realised what they were doing.
Drystone walls have been knocked over - the loggers simply drove their trucks and cutting machines straight through the walls without bothering to at least remove enough stones to make an access area.
Fences too were destroyed by driving trucks straight through them.
The cutting was haphazard too - some trees were cut almost at root level - others have left a stump 3 or 4 feet high. Huge amounts of wood have been left lying around and masses of branches litter the site.
Many years ago I had a job which involved regular contact with Forestry Commission Offices in Cumbria and North Wales. I often saw logging operations in those areas and these were undertaken in a much more efficient manner. Walls were dismantled and fences removed to allow access. Trees were cut to a regular height and the site cleared on a daily basis.
They have made a real mess on Darwen Moors.

What is going on? Folk are more stressed and tense than ever and just when they find a way for little relaxation and pleasure away from the stresses of the day; such as taking the dog for a walk, some jobsworth tries to stop it. The next step will be if it cannot be stopped then TAX it.

My cousin Martin lives nearby, and is very cross that he can’t take his dog there for a walk anymore. By the time they get to the next nearest trees, the poor thing walks around with its legs crossed, and its eyes start watering. I have advised him to notify the RSPCA, as this is cruel – dogs have to pee somewhere.

What is it that makes everyone think this is a beauty spot. Is it the vast amounts of rubbish behind the already damaged walls or the condoms that have been blown up like balloons and hung from trees. Maybe its the orange hand painted signs that someone has daubed on the gates and fences saying "private keep out" or "do not enter" and I wonder why.

The trees were so dense that no one could easily walk through the woods anyway and my understanding of these sort of plantations is that they are treated as a crop and would be felled anyway. Now they are down it should help keep all the gays, doggers and fly tippers away and so keep it cleaner in more ways that one.

I do not want to feel intimidated when trying to walk and gain access to the moorland which is the true beauty of our area. The ones complaining are blinkered and cannot see the real benefit of it being cleared whilst maybe having other interests in the dark corners of the woods. I shall say no more.

The Bolton Evening News reports that these trees have been felled specifically to get rid of the doggers. Now, given that these newspapers are linked, one would have thought that some coherence in their reports would prevail. Obviously not!

I don't anybody would have really bothered about them being cut down if it had been done properly, but it looks awful! There are stumps and branches all over the place! What about the wildlife that use these woods (not the Doggers) lol!
.
My son was so upset about it he wanted to camp out with banners! Like when the people chopped down the trees for the M65 motorway! lol

Those trees supported midges, according to residents. Midges are eaten by small mammals and birds, wasps, spiders and some other insects, providing food along the food chain. No use to people, eh? People only want fast garbage food. And definitely a future (in the next 20 years, probably) that only consists of concrete and plastic.
