A TEENAGER is in critical condition following a suspected hit-and-run.

Police were called to Springfield Road, Burnley, at around 11.45pm last night to reports an 18-year-old pedestrian had been struck by a black VW Golf while crossing the road near to the junction with Hollingreave Road.

The 18-year-old man, who is from Burnley, was left with serious head injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital where his condition is described as critical.

A 36-year old-woman from Burnley was arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving and a 25-year-old man, also from Burnley, was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. 

They remained in custody this afternoon.

Sgt Lee Harris, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “This collision has left a young man with some very serious injuries and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision or who has any information which could assist with our investigation to come forward and contact the police.”

Residents described Saturday night's incident as a 'shock' following the collision.
One resident, who lives several yards away on Malborough Street, said: "There were flashing lights all around and a helicopter circling round the area."
