AN ACCRINGTON MP is calling for action to be taken to repair road verges at an housing estate.

Graham Jones was so concerned about the state of the roads on Fern Gore Avenue and Clarence Road that he took photographs of them.

Posting on his Facebook page, he wrote: “I just want to say what poor state some of the verges are on Fern Gore.

“It is in some ways understandable, with narrow roads and little chance of off-street parking with modern brick-built terrace rows.

“They can’t be left like this though.”

However, Cllr Munsif Dad, who represents the Spring Hill ward, which contains the area, admits it has been a long-standing issue, especially at this time of year, and they were going to battle for it to be fixed.

He said: “Fern Gore has some narrow roads and alleyways and the grass has been cut up quite bad.

“Last year I reported it to the police to ask for some intervention and ask about what can be done on there.

“The main roads concerned were Fern Grove Avenue and Clarence Road.

“Because they are narrow roads, drivers are having to make way to the road side to allow people to pass.

“But by driving up on the roadsides it is leaving it churned up.

“During spring and the summer it looks beautiful as the grass is growing and there is no damage.

“It looks a disgrace and it does not give people a good impression of the area if they are passing through.

“I am hoping that Lancashire County Council will be able to do something about it as I have asked the officers about it.”

Cllr Dad insists it is not just the grass verges that are a problem for local residents in the area.

He said: “The road condition is bad too and it has been reported to Lancashire County Council as well.

“If they did repairs to small areas then they would not have to be resurfaced with such a big job.

“There has been some intervention on Wordsworth Street, and also speed bumps have been put in other areas nearby too.

“Some things have been done by Lancashire County Council in this area before and we hope more will be done on Fern Grove Avenue.

“We are going to continue to fight for action until something is done about it.”

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We repair damaged grass verges, which could be due to vehicles parking or driving on them.

“If people continue to drive across verges, then we may need to look into other options to stop it from happening again in the future.”
