A GROUP of young football fans were left feeling ‘privileged’ and with an ‘affection and loyalty’ to Blackburn Rovers after being special guests for the home win against Shrewsbury Town.

Rovers teamed up with Blackburn United for the top-of-the-table clash, with 20 members of the local grassroots football club invited to attend the game.

Members of the club were flag bearers before the match, which Rovers won 3-1, welcoming the two teams on to the pitch, having been given a behind the scenes tour of Ewood Park prior to kick-off.

Farhad Khan, a parent of one of the youngsters, said the day was a great way to build bridges between Rovers and the BME community.

He said: “Judging by the smiles on our young people’s faces, everyone had a great time – they are still talking about it now.

“The day was well structured. The stadium tour and walking out onto the pitch with the Blackburn Rovers flag was much enjoyed by all who took part and gave them a sense of ownership towards their home club.

“This is a great step taken towards building bridges between BRFC and the BME community.”

Imran Akuji, a Blackburn United club representative, said it was a privilege for the youngsters to be involved.

“Both the young people and the parents thoroughly enjoyed the day,” he added.

“The tour of the stadium and particularly walking through the players’ tunnel was amazing.

“The young people felt privileged to hold the club flag in the centre circle before kick-off and have been talking about it since.

“The club officials were very welcoming and brilliant hosts. It was a good game, with a fantastic result, which further excited the young fans.

“I truly believe the club has impacted positively on the young people and they left feeling affection and loyalty to their home town football club.”
