A GROUP of former students has made a series of donations to organisations working with young people in the area.

Accrington Grammar School Old Boys Association has given £250 each to the Lancashire Police Voluntary Cadets Scheme and to the Hyndburn Cricket Development Association.

Bob Dobson, membership secretary, said: “It’s all money we’ve just raised through the membership fees.

“Instead of just having it sitting there in the bank we want to spend it on projects which help the school boys and school girls of today.

“We’re just grown up school boys ourselves and we want to make sure that people today get the same opportunities and even more.”

PC Nathan Shaw received a cheque on behalf of the cadets for the donation, which receives no funding from the police budget.

Mick Deasey received the money for the cricket association and said it will go towards paying for facilities and equipment for clubs in the area.

Two lots of £250 will also be given to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme at Accrington Academy and Accrington and Rossendale College.
