The delays came as drivers also had to deal with problems caused by Storm Doris hitting the area.

County Councillor David Whipp, who represents West Craven on Lancashire County Council, said on Facebook: “Traffic lights on at Foulridge already this morning: cue chaos. No work is actually being carried out at Foulridge. Completely bonkers.”

Work began resurfacing the road at the site on Monday and is scheduled to take place until Monday, March 13, and will cost an estimated £50,000.

Repairs will take place to ironwork, drains and manholes with most of the resurfacing scheduled to take place next week The work is taking place between 9.30am and 3pm to aim to minimise disruption, with a 20mph speed limit in place throughout the work and traffic controlled by stop and go boards.

However the work cau-sed long delays and people took to Facebook to express their anger.

Sarah Helen Brooks said: “I left home at 7.45am and got to work at nine in Colne. It’s a 10 minute journey usually.”

Peter Gornall said: “Just got through 45 minutes in traffic. No one working other than a couple of people operating the traffic lights.”

Derek Bates said: “With the weight of traffic on the road it was always going to lead to long queues.”

The work took place from the junction with Langroyd Road heading North past the reservoirs to St Michael’s church on the outskirts of Foulridge.

Traffic was reported heading back from the junction heading back to the Kelbrook roundabout.

A county council spokesman said: “It’s likely this was the work that was the cause of the delays.

“The closure order runs until March 13 but if we get good weather and don’t encounter any unforeseen problems we hope to be finished earlier than this.”
