A BLACKBURN school which is spread across two buildings is set to move into one following a decrease in pupil numbers.

Cedars Primary School in St James Road currently has two buildings, one for juniors and one for infants.

But now plans have been submitted to Blackburn with Darwen Council to relocate infant pupils into the upper school, which will receive a variety of upgrades costing between £1.6million and £1.9million.

The school is looking to get approval for the demolition of one wing of the junior school and replace it with an extension which will include a nursery, reception and year one classrooms and a multi-use hall.

Chair of governors Simon Jones said it is not “financially sustainable” to keep both buildings open.

He said: “We have had a reduction in our intake mainly because of other free schools being built nearby.

“It’s very expensive to upkeep these two buildings and it’s no long financially sustainable, we simply have to do this now.

“Teachers seem to find themselves constantly moving from one building to another and I think educationally this will be better for the children.

“The transition between primary and high school can be enough of an ordeal for kids without having to transfer at the age of seven as well.

“Even thought they are the same school it can feel like they are two different ones.

“I think it is definitely for the best and some of the upgrades we’ve already made, like in the kitchen at the upper school, are really fabulous.”

The school is also planning to add additional playground facilities for the infant children that move and the kitchen at the upper school has already received a refurbishment and upgrade.
