They issued final-warning notices to drivers that a repeat offence could lead to fixed-penalty notices and fines.

The police enforcement action was sparked by Marsden ward councillors Tommy Cooney and Neil McGowan after discussions with the school and nearby residents concerned at the danger to pupils.

Three motorists received the warning notices in last week’s action.

Cllr McGowan said: “Some of the parking by a small minority of parents was just irresponsible and dangerous. The school had repeatedly warned them of the danger and put warning A-boards out to try and prevent it.

“We had several complaints from residents who were having their driveways obstructed and grass verges damaged and from concerned parents. We consulted the school and spoke to the neighbourhood policing team who sent down officers to issue warning notices.

“I hope the three enforcements issued act as a warning to motorists that if you park irresponsibly, the police can and will take action.

“We have been told by the officers that next time they visit and find this sort of parking fixed penalty notices will be issued.”

“Parking is limited near the school and we need everyone to work together to ensure everyone can come and go safely.”

Cllr Cooney, said: “I welcome the intervention by the police to help us deal with the issue of poor parking outside Castercliff school.

“The vast majority of parents co-operate with us and the school, however a small number continue to park recklessly.

“Not only is it inconsiderate it causes safety issues.”

School principal Mark Sherwin said: “We are extremely grateful to the councillors and police who we asked to help us with this matter.

“The safety and welfare of our pupils is of upmost importance to us and, while it is only a minority of motorists causing concerns, we do not want to see any of our children at risk. We welcome the police intervention, and hope that their actions will add to the letter sent to all parents to prevent poor parking in the future.”
