THE details for a proposed £9million pound redevelopment of Clitheroe’s historic market are set to be unveiled tomorrow.

Submitted by Nelson-based Barnfield Construction, the new Market Quarter will feature a 60-bed hotel, retail and leisure units, a 56-space car park and revamped market hall.

The 900-year-old site would be able to hold 34 cabins and 19 stalls and would be part of one of the biggest private investments in the town.

The plans will be on display for residents to look at until Saturday and they will get the chance to speak to the builders.

Cllr Mary Robinson, Leader of Clitheroe Town Council, said the market needs to be ‘revitalised’ in some way.

She said: “I will be very interested to see what the everyone thinks of these plans.

“I use the market on a regular basis and have done for many years, but I have found there are more mature customers using it than younger ones.

“Younger people may look at these new plans and believe it’s the right way forward, to revitalise it.

“Whereas the older generation, who have used it for several years, might feel inclined to want to keep it the way it is.”

Barnfield Construction, which has worked on projects including the Globe Centre in Accrington, the Ace Centre in Nelson, Boundary Mill in Colne and Stanley House Hotel and Spa in Mellor, was chosen from a shortlist of developers following a selection process.

Ribble Valley Borough Council leader, Cllr Stuart Hirst, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to bring modern retail and leisure facilities to Clitheroe town centre and Barnfield’s plans, which are nearing finalisation, are truly impressive.

“These are truly exciting times for Ribble Valley and I invite residents to come along and see the plans for themselves.”

Detailed plans for the scheme will be submitted to the council by September and a final decision will then be made.

Phase one involving the construction of the new market is scheduled to start next spring, with phase two involving the remainder of the site completed by the summer of 2019.

Tim Webber, managing director and chairman of Barnfield Construction said: “The scheme promises to provide a new retail and leisure experience for Clitheroe.

“Not only with the creation of a new market, but by securing a number of high-quality retail and leisure operators not currently represented in the town.

“We invite residents to come along and meet us tomorrow, where we will be at hand to answer any of their questions.”

The plans will be displayed in the Ribble Valley Council Chambers from 10am to 4.30pm on Friday and 10am to 3pm on Saturday.
