HUNDREDS of thousands of votes were cast in East Lancashire today in only the third nationwide referendum in UK history...and even dogs got in the act.

Those heading to the polls were blessed with fine weather as the decision was made whether the country should remain a member of the European Union or leave.

The Electoral Commission released preliminary figures that a record 46.5 million people had registered to vote in the poll.

The Leave and Remain campaigns have waged a four-month battle to decide the nation’s European destiny, with many voters complaining of referendum fatigue such is the way it dominated the news agenda in recent weeks.

Voters were asked the question: ‘Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?’

Votes are to be counted in Blackburn, Burnley, Accrington, Rawtenstall, Nelson and Clitheroe, tonight, with the results then fed through to the chief counting officer, who was based at Manchester Town Hall.

East Lancashire has been pinpointed by researchers at the University of East Anglia as one of the as one of the key regions which would decide the vote.

One of the national trends on social media was #dogsatpollingstations and even Paddy and Jager got in on the act at Waddington
