AN East Lancashire woman went more than the extra mile to raise money for an arts company - including continuing a charity trek with a fractured arm.

Barbara Sanders, 64, finished an almighty 700-mile trek from Penzance to Burnley to raise money for Mid Pennine Arts, which has undertaken countless projects in the area.

Mrs Sanders, the wife of former Burnley councillor Peter Kenyon, has raised more than £700 so far for the company.

The achievement was made all the more impressive as she completed the last two weeks of the walk with a fractured arm, after slipping on a path whilst walking in Shropshire.

Having camped out everywhere she went before the accident and carried a rucksack containing a tent, clothes and food everywhere she went, Mrs Sanders had to scale down her supplies drastically but still carried a 20lb bag for the final 14 days of the journey.

She arrived back in Burnley yesterday where she stopped off at the Singing Ringing Tree at Crown Point. At the finishing line Mrs Sanders was greeted by members of MPA, friends and the Clarion Choir who marked her arrival in song.

Mrs Sanders, who worked at the Altham Oak and Carpentry Co-op and was treasurer at the Burnley Community Credit Union, set off from Penzance on March 1.

She walked the North Coast Path, through the Somerset Levels, along Offa’s Dyke, across the Black Mountains, through the Peak District and the Pennine Way, sometimes during horrendous weather conditions including snow.

Mrs Sanders said: “It’s been challenging and it’s been tremendous. I have seen a lot of countryside and met some wonderful people.

“I have had tremendous support and have updated people about my journey each day online. The supportive comments have really kept me going.

“There were times after the fall when I contemplated giving up and I took it on a day by day basis. But in the end the endorphins that were released when I was walking and the medication I was on meant I didn’t really feel the pain.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has sponsored me so far."

“Mid Pennine Arts has contributed to the Culture of East Lancashire, and particularly Burnley for the last 49 years and 2016 is their fiftieth anniversary.”

MPA creative director Nick Hunt said: “What she has achieved is outstanding."

“We appreciate it enormously and are very grateful to those who have sponsored her.

“MPA is 50 years old this year, and all funds raised by Barbara are going towards the anniversary programme of activities.”
