Earlier in the day temperatures had topped 25C and forecasters are predicting a heatwave.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was called after reports than a man had gone under water and could not be found.

A search of the area was carried out involving police, the fire service and the police helicopter. The body of a man, believed to be in his 20s was later recovered.

A Suffolk Police spokesman said: "As is standard procedure, the death is currently being treated as unexplained. At this stage there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances."

The fire service issued a statement warning people to take precautions as temperatures rise.

It read: "You or your family may be tempted to cool off with a swim in a local river, reservoir, lake or in the sea.

"We are asking people to stay safe following a tragic incident at Alton Water.

"The best way to stay safe in or near the water is to take some sensible precautions and prevent accidents from happening."

The statement added that water is often a lot colder than expected which can impair a person's physical capabilities.

It is also difficult for swimmers to estimate depth before they get in, struggle to get out once they are in, or know what lies beneath the surface.

"Never drink alcohol during or just before swimming or while carrying out activities such as boating or water skiing. This seriously affects judgment and your ability to get out of a problem," the statement added.

"If you're going to go swimming, make sure that somebody is nearby so you can shout for help if you get into difficulties. Only swim where this is safe and permitted. Look out for warning signs."
