ROVERS and Clarets fans may not be cheering on their teams in this year’s FA Cup final – but there will be at least one supporter of each club at Wembley.

Blackburn follower Greg Wallace and Burnley-mad Margaret Lupton have won places in the Songs of Praise FA Cup Fans’ choir. They will join 62 others in performing the competition’s traditional anthem, Abide With Me on May 30.

Fans were asked to submit their memories of the cup. Mr Wallace, recalled watching a tie on TV in 1995, he said: “As I walked in, I realised I was the only Blackburn fan – in my Rovers shirt as well – among some 300 mad Geordies.

“Newcastle won 2-1 and the Newcastle fans gave me a guard of honour as I left, all applauding.”

Mrs Lupton was selected by judges for her story about the Clarets’ 1962 final loss against Tottenham Hotspur.

She said: “My dad managed to secure two tickets, but wanted to take both me and my elder sister to Wembley. He drove us down in our Mini van.

“Optimistically, my dad hoped to be able to purchase a third ticket outside the stadium, so my sister and myself joined the other fans on the terraces in good time, to enjoy the pre-match atmosphere, including the community singing.

“Sadly, the ticket touts would not release their tickets at a reasonable price, even after kick-off. They simply tore up their surplus tickets in front of the remaining disappointed fans.

“Dad ended up listening to the match action standing by a transistor radio at an ice-cream van. He then had to drive us back home to Lancashire. And to cap it all, Burnley lost 3-2 .”
