East Lancs to share in £240m enterprise and transport windfall

Lancashire Telegraph: Centenary Way could be in line for improvements Centenary Way could be in line for improvements

EAST Lancashire is to share in a £240 million enterprise and transport investment to provide better connections between employment areas and rail and bus stations.

Key schemes including improvements to the Clitheroe to Blackburn to Manchester rail corridor and repairs to Burnley’s Centenary Way viaduct are going ahead as part of the Lancashire Growth Deal, alongside county priorities such as the A6 Broughton bypass and new links roads between the M55 and Preston and St Annes.

The Whitehall announcement will see £84.2 million invested in the first year, with an indication award of a further £149.6 million from 2016-17, with the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) taking the lead over where the money should go.

Edwin Booth, LEP chairman, said: “The growth deal will establish an investment package worth over £360m with the potential to create more than 4,000 new jobs in Lancashire over the coming years.”

County council leader Jennifer Mein said: “We will work hard to deliver new jobs, homes and business growth opportunities, which will help to re-establish Lancashire as a leading national economic centre.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was in Blackpool and Preston yesterday to launch the Lancashire spending round.

Mr Clegg said: “We’re placing the power and money in the hands of people in Lancashire who know how to spend it best, making a real difference to local communities.”

At least the new M6 direct Lancaster avoiding road has had the plans passed now but its probably disabled by sets of traffic lights and roundabouts where there should have been bridges and perhaps it would have been built 20 years ago but for the Green Party being strong on Lancaster council due to its university community. Even the 1989 LCC switch to Transit’s from 13 tonners was theoretical green policy inspired like the cycle lanes and 20 Zones all by politicians appeasing the promoters of the now well proven fraud Co2 causes global warming theory. It must now be obvious to any honest intelligent people that all along the Green NGO’s have been working to increase the profits and share prices of the Big Oil companies ( they claim to be working against to get public donations ) by the fact that DECC is now proposing to invest in diesel generators to back up wind farms now proven useless at providing enough reliable power to meet our energy needs. Its recently been reported that Greenpeace lost 3 million gambling on Euro currency futures betting that it would significantly fall probably as a result of the EU blindly continuing to follow their climate change mitigation policy. However the value of the Euro went up as major EU players like Germany have now woken up to the fact that anyone who implements their green inspired policy is committing economic suicide probably due to the fact that German industry now has to use diesel generators if their operations need a constant secure energy supply. Germany is now building at least ten new big coal ( Brown lignite most Co2 emitting fossil fuel of all ) fired power stations ASAP in an attempt to stop its industry closing down. It was no surprise to me that its now been reported that the current war in Iraq is being funded by wealthy private individual stock market celebrity mostly but not exclusively Gulf State Arabs obviously to force up oil prices, plus the same principle probably also applies to Syria.

@brossen99 :
Spot on with many of your comments. One to add to your list - last week figures were released showing that accidents, serious injuries and deaths had all increased in 20mph areas. LCCs expenditure of £9 million on such schemes would appear to be money wasted.

On the main thrust of the news item, I wonder how much of this money will be find it's way to East Lancashire? Repairing Centenary Way (which would have to be done anyway in due course) ? How will that increase employment?

The Colne/Foulridge bypass is still simmering unfortunately! The powers that be would have us believe that it won't happen! The money given to The Enterprise partnership should use the money to improve the roads, rail, buses, cycle ways and pedestrian walkways rather than to build new roads such as bypasses and more industrial areas which will create more traffic, not less. Unfortunately many on the board of the partnership are local businessmen and therefore their priorities lie elsewhere!! It is a joke that they are responsible for how this money is spent.

Giving businessmen control over transport spending is a green light to road building as they rarely use public transport preferring their 4x4's.
They must have that oversight taken away from them before they do more damage to the landscape and further neglect investment in greener forms of transport

Brossen, have a read of this: June 2014, Reuters. Germany produced 50% of her energy needs from solar power. In other words, you're talking ****. Again.
