BUSKERS are to be given a chance to perform in Darwen’s Three Day Market hall.

Markets boss Gwen Sangster has announced the launch of a monthly programme of performances by local buskers.

Mrs Sangster said she believed providing a space for people to perform would be an innovative way of attracting new people into the market.

She said: “I love the idea of the market being a space where people can come and showcase their talent.

“This is a great opportunity for young and old to perform for a captive audience of traders and shoppers.

“They can invite family and friends and raise a few pounds for themselves or a good cause. We have teamed up with musician Phil Knight, from Clitheroe, who is working with us to coordinate the rota of performers.

“He has a wide network of musicians and a successful history in organising ‘open mic’ type events.”

‘Music on the Market’ will launch on Mother’s Day weekend on Saturday, March 28, in the Three Day Market with free Mother’s Day flower themed crafts for children in the Annexe area of the six-day market.

Mrs Sangster herself has a musical background, having once been half of a professional folk duo.Now singing with Blackburn People’s Choir, she recently had the opportunity to record a CD in a professional recording studio and will be performing a solo at the forthcoming Mayor’s Command Performance at Darwen Library Theatre.

Marsh House councillor Tom Evans, lead member for regeneration at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “It is encouraging to see new events being piloted to help boost the market.

“I hope this initiative will not only help raise the profile of the market but get more people involved in community activities.

“Music is good for the mind and soul and I hope people will come along and support these events.”
