HYNDBURN Labour leader Miles Parkinson is working the final details of the borough budget for 2014/15 which he hopes will enable him to freeze council tax for residents.

The figures have to be ready for debate by Tuesday February 18 at the council’s resources overview and scrutiny committee at Scaitcliffe House, in Ormerod Street, Accrington at 10am.

Coun Parkinson and his finance portfolio holder Joan Smith will spend the next couple of weeks working on their final calculations, He said: “We hope we can produce a budget that will allow us to freeze council tax for the next year and avoid compulsory redundancies.

“It is a fine balance between those priorities and protecting services.

“We are also having to look ahead to 2018. Whichever party wins the 2015 general elections, things are going to remain difficult for local authorities.

“We have seen a number of voluntary redundancies and staff and councillors are working hard on this.

“Coun Smith and I are working hard to get the figures and details spot on.”
