A BRAVE border collie that amazingly recovered after being crushed by a tractor has been short-listed for a national Pet Survivor Award.

One-year-old Pip was nominated for the competition, which will raise money for animal charity PDSA, by her owner, Joanne Wagg- ett, who has a farm in Clayton-Le-Dale.

On a scorching day in July, Pip took shelter from the sun under-neath the wheel of a tractor. She was hidden from the driver’s view and, as the vehicle began to move, Pip was horrifically crushed.

Joanne said: “She hadn’t been with us for very long before the accident happened, and we were so upset.

“I didn’t think there was any chance she’d survive.”

Pip was rushed to Abbeydale Vets, in Blackburn, where vet Martin Gabbott discovered her pelvis was completely pulverised and her diaphragm had ruptured, forcing her stomach into her chest.

Pip’s pelvis was rebuilt by plat-ing her right side, and removing the hip bone.

Mr Gabbott said: “Pip’s survival was unbelievable.

“In 12 years as a vet, I’ve never seen a dog come back from this type of injury.”

The professionals all agreed that Pip’s survival was remark-able, but were stunned to find her trying to get back on her feet only two days after surgery.

Joanne slept by Pip’s side for two weeks, and converted a cattle trough which she filled with clean water, and sterile salts, for Pip to swim in twice a day.

Joanne said: “It’s wonderful to see how well she has recovered. She is such a happy dog and has, to everyone’s surprise, become a brilliant worker.

“She can round up sheep like she’s been doing it all her life.”

The PDSA Pet Survivor Award aims to recognise extraordinary tales of courage among pets, and Pip has already impressed the judging panel made up of Atomic Kitten star Liz McClarnon, vet and TV presenter Steve Leonard, and PDSA vets Elaine Pendl-ebury and Sean Wensley.

Liz McClarnon said: “Judging was so hard.

“Pip is just so sweet, and what an awful story. In all the stories I read, both the owners and vets showed complete commitment to help these little heroes survive.”

To vote for Pip, text ‘vote Pip’ to 70099.

Each text will result in a £1 donation to PDSA, and all funds raised will go to the charity.

Voting closes at midnight on Sunday, December 15.
