New bid for extra women's fitness funding in Hyndburn
A HEALTH initiative for women in Hyndburn is set to continue for another three years after proving popular.
Active Women launched in 2010 and was funded by Sport England to the tune of £90,000 to provide dance, fitness and sports opportunities to women in Hyndburn.
It was hoped the service would have 200 members and 1,640 participants by the end of this year.
But by June it had 1,692 members and more than 2,500 participants.
The council has called the scheme a ‘huge success’ and has applied for funds to extend the project.
Portfolio holder for education, leisure and arts, Coun Ciaran Wells, said even the ‘ambitious’ council did not forsee the project proving so popular.
He said: “We were looking to try and make sure people who didn’t wish to attend our centres could engage and do it in a comfortable way, so we were ambitious about it.
“We are always looking to support and continue something that has contributed massively to the health of the borough.
“Now it’s about us getting our heads together to ensure we can continue to fund it and keep it going.”
Active Women has a timetable of more than 20 classes a week at a cost of £2.50 per class.
Several women from Hyndburn have praised the scheme in case studies handed to the council.
Angela Dugdale, from Accrington, said: “I heard about Active Women via my sister and had already heard about Zumba but wasn’t sure what it was.
“I decided to give it a go through the Active Women project with Jess on a Friday and a Saturday.
“I love attending both classes, it’s so much fun. It has benefitted me as it has improved my fitness, therefore I am feeling much healthier and better than I have for years.”
Active Women has also held several fundraising events for charity.
