Cash to be handed-out to Darwen community groups
9:22am Saturday 17th August 2013 in News
MORE than £3,000 will be handed out today to community groups in Darwen.
The latest round of grants from the Crown Paints and Darwen Town Council Community Awards will be given out at Darwen Gala.
Groups, including a Brownies troop, Newrad Fisheries and Hoddlesden Bowling Club will receive a combined £3,250 from the awards scheme.
Every year, the council and the Hollins Road firm combine to put up the cash grants, with £30,000 available this year, £10,000 from Crown and £20,000 from the council.
Among the awards was a £1,000 grant for Newrad Fisheries to help fund new equipment.
Secretary of the Watery Lane club Rita Billington said: “The cash will help us to do maintenance to make it safer, in particular for our disabled members.
“The paths can become dangerous with wet leaves and animal droppings and the money will enable us to buy a petrol-powered pressure washer that doesn’t need plugging in.
“We are delighted to have got this grant. It makes a big difference.”
The Darwen committee of Macmillan Cancer Support will receive £200, to be used to buy a gazebo.
Treasurer Mary Binns said: “We do a lot of fundraising events outside and we tend to get wet, so this will help prevent that.
“If there is any cash left over after we have bought the gazebo it will go towards buying raffle prizes to help with future fundraising.”
To apply for a grant, download a form from www.darwentowncouncil.org.uk Darwen Town Council deputy chairman Trevor Maxfield, who sits on the judging panel said: “There are so many deserving groups in Darwen and it is a real pleasure to be able to help them out in this way.
“Any other groups who are in need of funding and haven’t already applied for an award should come forward.”
