Blackburn Rovers fans pelt club owners Venky's with snowballs
12:57pm Monday 21st January 2013 in News
By Emma Cruces, Reporter
THE husband of Blackburn Rovers' owner was hit in the face by a snowball thrown by a fan during a protest outside Ewood Park.
A crowd gathered outside the ground on Saturday to give the Venky’s a frosty reception ahead of Rovers' clash with Charlton Athletic.
As the owners emerged from their fleet of Rolls Royces, they were met with a chorus of boos and chants of 'Venky's Out'.
The protest culminated when snowballs were thrown, one hitting chairwoman Anuradha Desai’s husband Jitendra in the face.
Police were involved in the incident and were said to have spoken with a fan.
The incident was caught on mobile phones and has attracted several thousand hits on video sharing website YouTube.
It shows the Rao brothers stepping out of their car and a snowball narrowly misses them as they walk away.
A second vehicle pulls up behind from which Mrs Desai and her husband follow her brothers into the club, however before they reach the entrance a snowball hits Mr Desai on the forehead.
Mr Desai, a chartered accountant, keeps walking as a driver hands him a hankerchief and he mops his brow. As the party disappear within, a third snowball hits the club’s entrance.
Mrs Desai was reported to be ‘shocked and upset’ at the snowball incident.
The family were also booed and jeered inside the ground. At half-time they watched children from Lower Darwen Primary School sing their charity single created to raise funds for Maddie’s Butterflies.
When they stood to leave after 65 minutes, boos and cheers erupted in the crowd as crowds sang ‘Cheerio’ to the family.
Rovers' managing director Derek Shaw said: “There were some scenes we could all do without when the owners have come to visit. It’s very disappointing this has happened.”
Mark Fish, secretary of the Rovers Action Group, said the incident was a spontaneous reaction from an isolated group of fans.
He said: “After what has happened over the past two years, the fans are hurting. The Venky’s are not around very often, it was something that was always going to happen.”
Rovers fan Dave Smith, from Darwen, said he did not see the snowball incident but that fans were unimpressed with the early exit.
He said: “The Venky Circus decided to exit Ewood Park after just 65 minutes. This is not only disrepctful but rude and arrogant.
“And they wonder why fans dislike them.”

not saying the snowball incident was clever - but there has been people on here saying "what if there was a stone in the snowball?....what if it was a bottle etc?" WELL IT WASN'T
unpopular politicians, members of the royal family and unpopular figureheads have had rotten veg, tomatoes and eggs chucked at them for centuries - why should these unpopular figures who are quickly ruining our club be any different?
they have no interest in our (not their) club, they have never responded to any correspondence to them (be it favourable or unfavourable) - they treat the club with contempt and their history with brfc is dogged with quite appalling decision making and a lack of vision.
we keep hearing from the rotating door of managers the our owners are "very very ambitious" - well i am sorry but the only ambition i see from these clowns is their ambition to get into the guinness book of world records in their attempt at a record breaking time to get a football club into administration.
blackburn rovers may well be a museum piece by the time these clowns have finished with it.
never mind snowballs i reckon they should be forced to wear sackcloth and ashes, stocks installed by jack walker's statue and for them to locked in for a day and not be pelted with rotten veg - but forced to listen to rovers supporters views on what a good job they are doing for our (not their) once beloved, proud club

More likely reinstate Kean on £2.5m a year and take you into administration.
Classy though to call them "scum" and "wa@nker" and tell them to "f*uck off" in front of the daughter though. I expect 14 year old Indian girls are used to that sort of language.
PS - great shot with the snowball though.

What does Shaw expect?? Even he cant be as naive as he appears - why sould people change their views just beacuse the owners decide to make a fleeting visit. They (Venkys and the PNE duo) all need to learn that respect is earned and not a right - arriving 10 minutes before KO in a fleet of expensive cars and only seeing 2/3 of the game is not a good way to for the owners who are looking to regain the fans trust to begin.
Nothing will change until Venkys and the PNE duo depart in my opinion.
I am fairly sure shaw and agnew would be in the snow ball firing line too if the oppurtunity arose!

Turning up in Rolls Royces in an area deprived of work and economy was most certainly an act of gall...what the hell has happend to Blackburn? It used to be a town with an economy and a bulging nightlife not too long ago, now there's very little work, and absolutely no nightlife...it's a ghost town Saturday night! It has a joke of a shopping centre that would fit in the corner of one of Manchester's numerous arcades. Whatever group of people run this town, need to get their fingers out and put some business and nightlife back into it!
Yep! It runs parallel to the way Venkys have run Ewood Park, caring little for the football tradition of townspeople supporting their local club, going back a century or more. They simply haven't a clue or a business care at all for the people that put money in Venky's coffers, so that they can arrive and depart disrespectfully in their Rolls.
They are not football fans, that is clear. They have bought into the club as a business enterprise that is backfiring on them, a culture shock against English grassroots footballing support, and it requires them to fully participate with passion and investment, or sell up and move on, putting it down to a bad experience of their making.
Meanwhile, the heart of the club - the fans - are anxious and frustrated, seeing no avenue to believe in hope or the 'turning of a corner' in their club's fortunes, on or off the field. As a Burnley fan, knowing only too well the ups and downs of fortune and oft' misplaced hopes in supporting the Clarets, to see Rovers being dealt with so ignominiously by its current owners really is a putrid deal.
Be under no illusion, Venkys know exactly what the supporters think of them, it may be a while before they visit again, and some of their investment in the club may be re-channelled to other business interests, just to make a point, because their egos may be smarting from what happend on Saturday?
Some fans need to be careful about what they wish for, they may get it, and it may not be to their liking!

I can understand fans leaving 5 minutes early to beat the rush but Venky's 65 minutes is disgraceful. They are obviously not football fans of any kind. They turned up to try to bolster support in a publicity stunt and it it backfired on them. Sell up and walk away you are killing this club.

I went into the ground and chose not to protest, but at the end of the day, do we not have a right to protest and show the owners that we are unhappy with what they have done to our club? Remember last season when stewards were frisking people to ensure they weren't taking banners into the ground?
If the PR company had any sense, they'd have had Venkys in the ground a couple of hours before and after K.O.
And I still find the snowball amusing.

What does it achieve? well who in the right mind would want to invest in Blackburn Rovers with fans as vitriolic as they are - yes everyone knows what a shambles it has become and maybe people felt better for voicing their grievances but it wont cahnge a thing. If anything Venkys are more likely to let Rovers drift than invest heavily for a few unsympathetic fans who seem to think the world owes the club greatness
GHet real we are where we are in the Championship mid table looking down - just lets hope Venkys dont take it out on the fans by withholding funds for Appleton to spend in the transfer market or it could be Crewe and Carlisle next season and some would say tht is all the fans deserve!

Its all in the sums take a premiership crowd of 23,000 at Blackburn, average ticket price of £22.50( 30 per adult 15 per kid 50/50 split) everyone buys a pie and a pint at £5.50 and that £28 per person, gate spend per game £644,000 per game and £12,236,000 per season, the lowest TV deal this season is £60 million ,gate receipts at a club like ours represent 12-15% of income in the premiership, the point is you can have your say but don't be so shocked when you are ignored fans stopped being the biggest relevance at clubs when sky jumped in. And yes they are in it for the money as are the majority of owners in the top tiers, even cities owners admit they bought it to put their country on the global map.

On the other side of the coin the verbal abuse was something else, it's one thing protesting and showing Venky's what you feel in a civilised manner, it's another using language that demeans every single Blackburn Rovers fan.
Language I might add that was directed at women and children as well.
What a pity BRSIT and BRAG haven't stepped up to the plate and condemned it, Mark Fish's comments basically supported the actions of these morons.
What a golden opportunity has been missed.

If I didn't want my 14 year old daughter to hear foul language, I wouldn't take her to a football match. I also wouldn't let her go to school. I also wouldn't let her go out with her friends. I also wouldn't let her watch certain films. I also.........Oh I give up!

Even better is the fact that your collective brain cell still hasn’t worked out that all this bile and constant abuse because the money has dried up or results are not going your way or the owners are not at your every beck and call has probably put off any decent manager or owner for that matter ever wanting to get involved in your pathetic little excuse for a football club.

2) women and children - so what? anybody with an ounce of sensitivity would not have arrived before kick-off in an armada of rolls-royces in a FU! gesture....a PR disaster
3) women and children - so what? if the beloved venkys had the merest scintilla of common sense they would have known that arriving just before kick off would be likely to encourage a negative reception from supporters who have had sand kicked in their faces for the last two years - to be honest, i am a little surprised they didn't get a more hostile greeting
4) women and children - so what? well boo hoo! a little industrial language. i have worked in all manner of environments from the shop floor to the board room and there was nothing unusual in the language on saturday....you will hear it in school playgrounds, sports fixtures (both spectators and players), any budsiness, pubs clubs, golf clubs - don't come the more holy than thou tosh. they must have known what they were in for...if they choose to bring a kid - then tough. what do you expect the disaffected to do when they see a kid - "oh gosh, a young child....forseuth we must restrain from using the medieval language of shakespeare and chaucer - grow up. if you want to live in a monastery...off you go.
FYI - I have nothing to do with BRAG, nor have i ever protested against the clowns in charge (save for the wigan game last season when i joined in the "kean out, venkys out" chanting throughout the ground. i just happen to think that if you think saturday was out of order then you have been living in a very antiseptic environment....for christ's sake in india they would be burning effigies.

This family are Billionaires in India they came in their Rolls Royce ,a family who for four decades built their business in India,USA,Spain and Brazil. It's up to them to invest some of their vast wealth into BRFC .These protestors have no rights to tell them what to do at BRFC.They have a Boardrooms of right people running the club and a Football Manager to look after the players .If they want to vent their angers the the people in the boardroom and football players needs to share some blames for BRFC worst league position in the Championship. The Venkys live in Pune India some 5,000 miles away who knows nothing about football in UK.The men in charge at the boardroom at BRFC are the guys needs to take blames.

What happened on Saturday was the culmination of nearly 2 years of systemic hatred built up simply because Venky's sacked Lardarse, and Mullen's mob had no-one left to tell them to bend over and pay homage to the mighty long ball.
The hatred and bile generated by these so called "fans" cost us our PL status just as much as Venky's incompetence, and for what?
Lardarse walked away with a big fat cheque, Mullen and Fish became the Presses "easy quote" targets having their 15 minutes of fame, (unfortunately it's ground hog day and we can't escape them, ever) and can't wait for the autobiographies to come out.
The eventual affect of Saturday? we don't know, but no-one can tell me that Mullen and Fish haven't seen and heard what went on, and if they had a gram of decency about them they would condemn it.
In fact they all but condone it.
Unlike you though I don't take any pleasure in what has happened to my club, I honestly wouldn't wish it one any club, any fan, not even Burnley. I sincerely hope you don't have a BRAG waiting in the wings if things go wrong.

“Once Proud” where does that SH*T come from, the only reason you ever got into the Premier league was because Jack (More money than sense) Walker bought it for you.
Lets look at the facts, without your current owners money to prop the club up, your losses of around £20M per year has no other outcome other than administration.
I hope Venky’s do walk away and leave you in the hands of BRAG, I’m sure they will be able to have a whip round and raise the £1.00 it’s probably worth by now, a fire sale of players and certain administration would soon follow.
I have immense pleasure week in week out reading about the continuing demise of all things BR, as they say, he who laughs last.

I sincerely hope you don't have a BRAG waiting in the wings if things go wrong.

where was any bullying of women and children - "venkys out" "you don't know what you're doing" etc etc! these are the legitmate concerns of many who have been treated by the venky family as if they are in the untouchable caste back at home.
if these incompetent fools choose to constantly and totally ignore any correspondence from MPs, council, representative groups, ordinary fans then i am afraid that they get a reception the like of what happened on saturday
how on earth can you call me "knuckle dragging" when you refer to "nazis" i am afraid that. what gives you any sense of ill-placed moral authority to judge what is right and wrong "i am way above you and your ilk" - you have no clue about the club, the town and the hurt that others are feeling.

on sunday you were referring to protesters as nazis - are you aware of how incendiary your comments are.
where was any bullying of women and children - "venkys out" "you don't know what you're doing" etc etc! these are the legitmate concerns of many who have been treated by the venky family as if they are in the untouchable caste back at home.
if these incompetent fools choose to constantly and totally ignore any correspondence from MPs, council, representative groups, ordinary fans then i am afraid that they get a reception the like of what happened on saturday
how on earth can you call me "knuckle dragging" when you refer to "nazis" i am afraid that. what gives you any sense of ill-placed moral authority to judge what is right and wrong "i am way above you and your ilk" - you have no clue about the club, the town and the hurt that others are feeling.
mob rule mentality - my backside!
what is this tosh about women and children - who outside the directors box knew the clowns were stupidly bringing a kid. and what is your beef about desai getting some clog - i recognise that we live in an egalitarian society where men and women should be treated equally. this particularly applies in business and as desai is the head of this particular serpent - then i am afraid to say - tough.
now go and spread you poisonous invective elsewhere - you are not welcome round here.
The word Nazi was used as at the end of video one someone shouts effing ****, but if you also find that acceptable then please continue. Now maybe you didn't hear the comment or maybe when I viewed it its because I wear headphones, never the less it is still there, so wind yer neck back in and get off your high horse.
You think its not only okay to barrack women and kids, you now think its okay to condone racist remarks.
Well I hopr they prosecute each and every guilty person. We should bring back stocks and place them outside the ground because, as you think it is okay to have objects thrown at you, we can pepper the perptrators with rotten vegetables and it'll be your idea.

Embarrssed to be a Rovers fan, how utterly classless and to compound their stupidity, they made a video of the incident and posted it worldwide. Like they are proud of it, what a bunch of lunatics.
You don't represent me and you never will.
I will condem it on behalf of me, what a repulsive set of animals we are turning into. A baying mob of women and children bullies.
Makes me sick
1) women and children - so what? the woman who has systematically launched a wrecking ball at ewood park is "upset" about a bl00dy snowball......forgiv
e my crocodile tears
You obviously enjoy bullying women and children.
This club made great inroads into bringing families to the ground and banishing the boot boy culture only to have it all dismantled by people like yourself. how can someone enjoy taking little kids to watch mob rule mentality

And these goons employed a PR firm only last week to try to improve their image with the fans.
Just exactly who advised them to leave after 65 minutes? You couldn't write this sh@t!
And yes - good shot with the snowball. Fully deserved, however I doubt they'll wake up and smell the coffee now.
Burnley Football Club fans have never stooped to the low life levels of so called supporters of your pathetic club.
“Once Proud” where does that SH*T come from, the only reason you ever got into the Premier league was because Jack (More money than sense) Walker bought it for you.
Lets look at the facts, without your current owners money to prop the club up, your losses of around £20M per year has no other outcome other than administration.
BRFC: Made in Blackburn, by decent, honest, hardworking and honourable people. Destroyed in India, by VERMIN!
Its the Indian billionaires are saving this country investing in our economies you dinglehead BRFC ,Land/Rovers ,jAGUAR,NORTHERN FOODS, CORUS,Poundstrechers
,QPR FC,and many more saved by the Indians and saved British Jobs.
The VEnkys are Billionaires of India so what if they came in their Rolls Royce so did Jack Walker came in his Rolls Royce and so did the Queen coming to Blackburn in a poor deprived norther town.Venkys are self made Billionaires and one 200 Billionaires of India. Its the WAlkers sold BRFC and ran away to Jersey with all the cash they made from sale of BRFC.
