AN East Lancashire dressmaker is looking forward to seeing one of her wedding dress creations on the nation’s favourite soap.

Coronation Street approached corset-maker Emma Green to dress bride-to-be Kirsty Soames – played by Colne actress Natalie Gumede – after seeing some of her other creations.

The purple dress will feature in the dramatic episode of Kirsty’s wedding to Tyrone Dobbs.

Emma, who owns Elysium Corsets in Darwen Street, Blackburn, was asked to make two dresses: One for Natalie as Kirsty, and another without corset bones for her stunt double, who will come into play as the wedding day goes spectacularly wrong.

The dress, a striking purple corset and fishtail skirt, were designed to reflect the ‘vampy and gothic’ side of the complex character Natalie portrays.

Emma said the dress was one of their existing patterns which Coronation Street had spotted through a mutual contact. ITV’s costume department then asked Emma’s team to make some changes to the dress.

It is not the first time the dressmaker’s creations have appeared on screen. Emma’s work has been featured on My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and Hollyoaks.

Emma said: “It was very exciting to get a call from Coronation Street and it was amazing working with them. They knew exactly what they wanted and one of our custom made pieces was very similar to what they had in mind.

“Corsetry is a very specialised skill and so when they when they decided that’s what they wanted for the wedding, they will have gone looking for specialist dressmakers like ourselves.

“I think what we ended up with is just right for Kirsty’s character. It’s really dramatic and vampy and should add to the scene.

“We had to make two, because the stunt double wouldn’t be able to do her thing if she was in a boned corset, it would be too constricting.

“It’s been absolutely fascinating working with Coronation Street and seeing how they do things.”

The two wedding episodes will be broadcast tonight on ITV1 at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
